Sarah Feight ~ in ~ SARAH'S CHOICE ~ by ~ Pegg Thomas

Hello, I’m Sarah Feight. Joy asked me to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised on the outskirts of Philadelphia.’Twas a wonderful to place to grow up, not in the heart of the city, but close enough to walk there on occasion. And far enough away to avoid the plagues that sometimes came through in the hot summer months. We were not rich, but we had enough of what we needed, and we had each other.

When I married David, we had such plans. His brothers were opening a new trading post on the frontier near Fort Pitt. They planned to trade with the Indians there, bringing in furs to sell in the east, as well as other items. It all sounded so… romantic. We would be some of the first people in that area of Pennsylvania. Our cabin would be made of logs cut to clear the area around the trading post. We would raise our family alongside the local Indians, learning from each other, to build a better future for everyone.

His brothers were both married, and when we arrived I, I met my sisters-in-law as well as my nieces and nephew. I also met a young Ottawa woman who spoke nearly perfect English. While my sisters-in-law were busy tending their children and homes, Spotted Shell and I explored the forest around the cabins. She shared my love of healing herbs and wild edibles. She showed me several of each that I had not known before. I was able to show her a few as well. ’Twas a wonderful friendship.

In those early days, it seemed our lives would be all we could have wished them. When that changed, we had little warning. Even what warning we had in no way prepared me for what was to follow. Nothing could have prepared me for what was to follow.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ A Familiar Spirit ~ in ~ CAST OUT: Chronicles of a Familiar Spirit ~ Ivani Greppi

As a familiar spirit, a demon, perhaps an imp, as some may choose to label me, my authority and control over generations of Branca’s family tree have been my lot for decades, spanning throughout three continents.

Just as a numerous company of rebel angels, I was given authority over bloodlines for multiple millennia. This is how we serve the rulers and principalities, the underworld’s gods, the spiritual forces, and dominions of this dark world.

It is our cup. Our portion. Our inheritance. Our pleasure to deceive and crush these mongrels made of flesh and spirit. To cause suffering. For them never to see the light of life and be satisfied. To blind the unbelieving ones’ minds, so the light of the Son may not dawn on them.

That is until an impertinent preacher man arrived on the scene attempting to usurp my power over these miserable immigrants assigned to me.

Did he show them a way out of their spiritual stupor?

Did his “weapons” strike terror in my heart?

Did he teach Branca and her family that the Son rises over those who have faith?

Did they learn that when the Son radiates His light, I must flee?

Has not this story been written for thousands of years?

What has been will be again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Now is there?

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Christina Jones ~ Writing Home ~ by ~ Amy Anguish

Hi. Christiana here, though most call me Chris. Here I am in my dream city, where I’ve been ever since graduating college. My dad and his best friend always talked of Huntsville, Alabama, and I knew it was the place for me. I found a cute little one-bedroom apartment, a job as a receptionist at a pediatric clinic, and a nice congregation to worship with. You’d think I’d be happier, right?

And yet, here I am, with boxes still packed around the living room, nothing hung on the walls, and no one local I can call a friend. My best friend, Tina, still lives back in Tennessee, and she begs me to move back every time we talk. But I can’t. My brothers have a bet going as to how long I’ll stay here before tucking tail and coming home.

Home.

Tennessee doesn’t feel like home, either. No more than Huntsville. If I didn’t know better, I’d say I was homeless. And yet, I know I’m not. I have a mailbox downstairs where I collect my bills and junk every day. And sometimes even a letter from Jordan.

Now there’s someone who knows what home is. He’s living on his family’s property in Louisiana, working his dream job of being a nurse practitioner, and leading singing at the congregation where he grew up. How did we meet? Tina. He’s her cousin, and when I started looking for a pen pal, she suggested we’d be a good fit.

I didn’t think I’d ever try being a pen pal again, but stumbling over that box of Gran’s old letters a few weeks ago really inspired me, I guess. We’ll see how long I stick it out this time. Growing up, I didn’t make it more than a few weeks.

Maybe if I find a picture to hang on my wall, it will feel homier. Or maybe, I just need to give up and let my brothers be right for once. Ugh. Who wants to do that?

I wonder if Jordan would have any ideas to help me feel more at home here in the place I always wanted to be.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Emily Strealer ~SPIES & SWEETHEARTS by Linda Shention Machett

Hello, everyone! My name is Emily Strealer, and I’m the youngest of three sisters. We were born and raised in the beautiful state of New Hampshire which borders Canada. As a result, I became interested in the French culture and language, eventually getting my degree in education with a minor in French. As a junior in college, I was blessed to be able to spend a semester in Paris, and I fell in love with the City of Lights. (Did you know the nickname came from the fact that this gorgeous city was one of the first metropoles to have electricity?)

My sisters Doris and Cora are a bit overbearing, and I spend much of my time while I was growing up trying to prove myself. Is that a problem for all youngest children? I wonder! After graduation, I started teaching in 1939, and things went well for a while. Then the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and our lives turned upside down. Many of my students enlisted as soon as they graduated the following June, and a few even secured permission to join up before they turned 18. Like everyone else in my small town, I did my bit for the war effort. I volunteered with the American Women’s Voluntary Service doing aircraft spotting and delivering messages. I also rolled bandages with my church group. I wanted to do more, but my family discouraged me from seeking other opportunities.

Then the craziest thing happened: I was accepted into a top secret government program called the Office of Strategic Services. Here’s how it happened:

I kept in touch with several of my college friends, some of whom are from what you might call the upper social strata. My family and I are poor, but we certainly don’t have the kind of money some of these folks do! Anyway, one of my friends contacted me and asked if I’d be interested in using my French skills for the war effort. Of course, I did! The interview and background check process seemed to take forever, but one day I came home from school to a telegram telling me to report in one week’s time. Because the organization was secretive, I didn’t find out where I was going until I arrived at a small, unassuming office in Maryland.

After weeks of training in everything from codes and ciphers to propaganda, communications, police methods, and disguise, I passed the course and two days later received my orders: I was to parachute into occupied France as a radio operator-a dangerous job with a life expectancy of six weeks. I was excited and terrified at the same time.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately) I was accompanied by one of my most difficult instructors, a rather handsome man named Gerard Lucas. It didn’t take us long to get embroiled in all sorts of trouble.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Doctor Katherine Clark ~ Courting Doctor Clark by Patty Smith Hall

Hello. My name is Doctor Katherine Clark, and I really don’t have time to talk right now. At this moment, my only concern is for the victims of a terrible train wreck that has happened on the outskirts of our small town of Hillsdale, Michigan. We were in the mist of the worst blizzard I’ve seen since moving here from South Carolina many years ago. Two trains collided at the height of the storm, and while there were few deaths, the remaining people are now stranded here until the spring thaw.

Oh heavens, is that Josh McClain? What is he doing here? I haven’t seen him since Papa and I left Abbeville soon after my mother’s death. Josh was the best. We’d get into all kinds of trouble back then, mainly because I’d want to save some bird or racoon or something. But Josh never complained. Sometimes, he’d even help me nurse my little creature back to health. He was the kind of friend I could depend on. A shoulder to cry on after our mothers were killed in a terrible carriage accident.

I hadn’t realized until this moment how much I’ve missed him.

But Josh is all grown up now, and wickedly handsome, though I’m not sure why I’d notice that. And he’s a doctor which is a pleasant surprise! Just one more thing we have in common. I wonder if he can still make me laugh. No one could make me laugh like Josh! But why was he here? His father owes the largest cotton mill in the southeast. Surely, he expected Josh to take over the family business.

I could have heard Josh right. Did he say we were engaged? Maybe, he’s concussed. That has to be it. Yet, he keeps saying it’s true. He has to have bumped his head because he’s talking gibberish. He’s adamant. We are engaged. But how can that be? We haven’t seen each other in almost fifteen years.

Of course, Papa and I will have to take him in. Josh is a friend of the family, after all, and maybe, just maybe he’ll tell me why he thinks I’m to marry him.

Engaged to Josh McClain? Impossible!

Or is it?

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Chelsea Hamilton ~ Legacy Reclaimed

I slid into the window seat in the first class cabin, snatched the small packet of tissues from my Louis Vuitton purse, and dropped my purse on the floor. I nudged it with my foot beneath the seat in front of me, then fumbled with the packet of tissues, struggling to see past the haze of tears.

An older gentleman sat beside me, but I stared out the window at the rainy Paris afternoon. I’d so longed to return to New Hampshire, to take my place at the company, but not like this.

After the flight took off, the gentleman beside me turned my direction. The smile he wore faded when he caught sight of my face. I could only imagine how ragged I must have looked. “Oh, dear,” he said. “You’ve had bad news.”

The kindness in his tone brought a fresh wave of tears, and I dabbed at my eyes.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

With a total stranger? Certainly not. Except I needed to talk to somebody, to share my grief and the fears that wouldn’t be silenced.

“My mother was killed in a car accident early this morning.”

“I’m so sorry.” He seemed genuinely grieved. “What a terrible shock.”

Indeed. I’d spoken to Mum the day before. We’d discussed the business, as usual. As I had done so many times, I told her how much I wanted to leave Paris and return to New Hampshire to work at the company my parents had started before I was born. It had always been my dream to carry on her parents’ legacy, but ever since Daddy’s death when I was twelve, Mum had wanted me to stay in Europe. She’d even gone so far as to hire bodyguards to protect me, as if danger lurked around every corner.

The old man was watching me still, a kind look in his eyes. I don’t why, but I explained further. “She was up on the mountain near our home in the middle of the night, and nobody seems to know why. It’s all so mysterious. I just wonder…”

“Wonder what?” the man asked.

“It’s silly, really. Just because Daddy was murdered doesn’t mean Mum was.”

The man’s bushy gray eyebrows rose on his forehead. “Your father was murdered?”

“It’s not related to Mum’s death.” My English accent was strong as ever. I’d have to work on losing that when I arrived in the States. “With Mum gone, I’m to inherit the business.”

“What kind of business?”

I shouldn’t say. If I did, our casual conversation would change, and this man could share my private business with the world. But he didn’t seem the Instagram type, and there was something about him that made me trust him. I needed to speak the truth now, to be open and honest. When I arrived home, I’d need to be on my guard. “I am Chelsea Hamilton. My parents owned Hamilton Clothiers.”

The man’s jaw dropped. “I didn’t recognize you with those sunglasses. I heard of her death on the business news this morning. I am so sorry for your loss.”

“Thank you.”

“That’s quite a burden for someone so young.”

Twenty-five, and I’d never worked a day in my life. Instead, I’d spent years at a boarding school, then at university in England, now in an unpaid internship in Paris. I’d had everything I’d ever needed, all my bills paid, and a generous allowance that afforded me the opportunity to buy whatever I wanted and travel where ever I chose—as long as it wasn’t home.

“Do you have siblings?” he asked.

“I’m an only child.”

“Is there nobody you can count on now?”

“My Uncle Frank.” The thought of him brought a smile. Uncle Frank was my only remaining relative in the world. “He’s worked at HCI since the beginning. He’ll help me until I get my feet under me. It’s just… This was never my plan. I thought I’d have years to learn the business. I planned to work in every department, really get to where I understood the nitty gritty. Now… I’m so lost. How could this have happened?”

The man patted my arm. “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.”
My voice squeaked as I added, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The Story Behind THE LADY & THE LAWMAN

Howdy y’all. The name’s Jodie Ross, but my big brother calls me “Jo.” Now don’t go getting the wrong idea about a gal like me sitting behind bars. Sure, I may be dressed like a man and not keep the best of company, but I can explain. What the handsome new greenhorn of a marshal doesn’t know is that I didn’t realize what I was getting into when I went to live with my brother after our folks died. I was only ten at the time after all.

You see, Jerry’s fourteen years older than me, so he’s seemed more of an uncle to me than a brother. We get along pretty well. He taught me lots of things Mama never would’ve allowed, like shootin’, ‘n’ trappin’, ‘n’ fishin’—things I really enjoyed. Only after I got good at it, he started takin’ trips for work. I hated it. He always left me behind. He said a neighbor would check on me, but they hardly ever did. He’d leave me alone in our cabin for days, then sometimes weeks at a time.

When he missed our first Christmas together without Mama and Papa, that was it. I’d had enough of being alone. I demanded he start taking me on his work trips. For a time, Jerry kept his line of work hidden from me, just asked me to mind the camp and occasionally hold the horses for him and his buddies.

Once I got used to having a full belly again, I started asking more questions. He said he did work like Robin Hood, taking from the rich to feed the poor. Considering the hard winter I’d endured alone, I didn’t want anyone, including myself, to ever have to go through such an experience again. I guess that’s why I never said anything. Although, I think deep down I knew my brother didn’t really care about helping other people, but he never complained when I’d share my portion of the spoils with those I saw who were down on their luck.

Lately, however, I’ve been rather longing to cut out on my own and put down some roots, instead of hopping around from abandoned shack to empty cavern or sleeping out under the stars, or cooking for slovenly men who only keep their hands off me because I’m better with a gun than they are and the fact my brother nearly killed the last guy who tried to get, shall we say, “fresh” with me.

Sigh. Maybe one day my life will get better, but from where I’m sitting, I don’t see how. Maybe the God my mama taught me about can help, but would He even hear a cry from a gal like me?

Our Story BEFORE The Story ~ LOST IN BEAUTY

Mina Everheart:
I’m a princess. A lot of people, after they hear about the King’s generosity, think that everyone is a child of the King by default. But that isn’t true. You have to be chosen. You have to be adopted. You have to want to be adopted.

I wanted to be adopted … after all, I became an orphan at age 5. But don’t feel bad for me. Sure, it’s sad. Worse – maybe. I mean, who’s to judge really? – but, worse, my parents were murdered. In front of me.

Yeah, okay, that makes me a little sad when I think about it, so I don’t think about it too often. I think about how much my parents loved each other and Egyptian artifacts. How they hunted for the truth. I think about how the King gives everyone purpose.

So when the King came for me, I was ready to go, thank you very much. Of course, my friends from the Kingdom say that I’m always ready for my next adventure. And, perhaps I have been a bit of nag, bugging the King about sending me on a mission, but, come on, can you think of anything more exciting? Besides, I just turned 20. I’m ready. Ready for whatever the King has in mind.

Hawk: I’m the 436th pharaoh of Osaze Island. We have kept the traditions of our fathers for thousands of years. I understand duty. I understand maat. And I don’t like change. Unless it is change that gets us back to how things have been for thousands of years. Because I am willing to admit that Osaze Island isn’t what it used to be. We need rain. We need children. And this part I hate to admit, but we need a pharaoh who doesn’t question his own divinity. Is it any wonder that Aten doesn’t hear my petitions?

What I don’t need is a prophesied princess. I don’t mind that one has been foretold. That contains the Osaze women’s expectations of marrying me. But I don’t actually need a princess to appear….

Our Story BEFORE The Story ~ Taming Petra ~ Cameo Courtships Collection

Hi everybody. I’m Petra Jayne Breaux—better known as Buckskin Pete Hollingsworth. I just bet you’re wondering how a young woman from a well-to-do Pittsburgh family came to settle in Colorado under the name of Buckskin Pete. Well, here’s the tale. My beloved Aunt Letitia and Uncle Peter invited me to go on a grand tour of the wild West with them, and I agreed. I was having the time of my life…right up until Uncle Peter fell ill. Only then did Aunt Letitia tell me he was dying. He passed away in Cambria Springs, and I was so heartbroken, I couldn’t leave. But I couldn’t support myself either. That is, until a new friend—a dime novelist—helped me. I’d tried to enter the Founders Day wood chopping contest, but they wouldn’t let women compete. (Since my grandfather was a woodsman, I learned my way around an axe as a girl.) So my friend suggested I dress up in buckskins and enter myself under an assumed name. Sure enough, I cut my long hair off, put on that buckskin suit, and entered under the name of Buckskin Pete Hollingsworth. I won the competition, the name stuck, and I’m steadily working as a scout, tracker, and other odd jobs. Oh, and thanks to my friend, I’ve got a whole series of dime novels written about me now.

And I’m Reverend Dustin Owens. I never woulda figured myself to become a preacher. Not with my upbringing. I was raised in a saloon, after all. My mother was…well, let’s be honest. She was a soiled dove, and my father…let’s just say I never had occasion to meet him. I lived in that world until I was nineteen. That’s when something terrible happened that forced me and my little sister, Josephine, to run. We wound up in Wyoming under the care of a godly man who helped us heal from our difficult pasts. As I opened my heart to the Lord, I felt Him drawing me into ministry. Can you imagine my surprise when, not all that long ago, He told me to return to this area and start a church? Almost exactly where it all began. I have to admit, I wasn’t too sure about moving back to this area until I happened to bump into a pretty, short-haired gal wearing buckskin trousers. She got my attention…and if you want to know why, well, please read our story. Taming Petra, part of Cameo Courtships.
