My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Sgt. Griff McKay ~ in ~ SOWN IN PEACE ~ by Joy Avery Melville ~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIP!

Joy says my story is celebrating a birthday. It's hard to imagine it's been a year since my heart was opened to the public and readers.

I'm Sgt. Griffin (Griff) McKay. I'm a retired Army guy. I worked as a Military Dog Handler/Trainer of other MWD handlers. When it came time to reenlist, I had a struggle over the decision for the first time in my career. You see, I saw men come home wounded while I was stationed in Texas, and the dogs they'd been trained with were turned over to another soldier. Broke my heart when I saw how callous the Army was at severing ties, the bonds, that were stronger due to the life or death situations over there in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I became an angry soldier. I could sense the damage I might do in working with the men and dogs who were being prepared to go serve in ways that could mean crippling or death to one or both of the team. It became clear to me I'd have to resign my position. Since working with those dogs and the men who were to handle them was all I was really trained for, I chose to retire and go home. To what? I could not imagine myself in a regular day-job.

I'd become less than pleased with God during the building up of my anger. I contacted a realtor in the area of Michigan where my sister, JJ Russell, lived, and I asked him to find me a property. A secluded, out of the way place. I planned to move there and pretty much crawl away and live as private a life as I could.

Funny, isn't it, how God moves us, sometimes without us realizing He's putting things in place for His glory and our good? Even when we are displeased with Him or disappointed in what He's allowed in our lives and those we care about.

Months later...

I came to Three Rivers and to the property I'd purchased without having stepped foot on the land.  I was absolutely thrilled by the amount of privacy it granted me... seclusion at its best, yet easily within five miles of Three Rivers
THEN
One afternoon, I was outside, ready to walk down to the very large pond across the driveway and away from the roomy cabin. As I stepped onto the gravel, something drew my attention. A young golden retriever was slowly moving my direction, working its way up the long, curving drive, dragging a large-linked chain hooked to its collar. Matted and dirty, the poor thing appeared to have been abused. As I approached the dog, it cowered and lay down, covering its muzzle with both front paws. My heart broke for the animal.

Now, you've got to realize I was all done with dogs. Too many memories had plagued me, since I'd worked with multiple breeds as an Army Military Dog Handler. Here I was, faced with a dog in need of care... urgent care... and I had no idea who to call. So, I phoned my sister, who worked in town and had for some time. As soon as I told her about this shaggy, miserable dog, she laughed. That's right! Laughed at the irony of it all.

I want you to read SOWN IN PEACE to find out what I decided to do with that poor canine and how God used it to bring me into Joy's novel. I'm so glad she was led to include me.. let's just say, I benefitted in many ways for her having done so.

Oh, and by the way, Joy is gifting a signed copy to someone who leaves a comment below - don't miss this opportunity to find out what she did with me in Sown In Peace!

The Author of My Story:   Joy Avery Melville

Fully intending to write Historical Romance—had in fact— she had no plans to deviate from that. God had something else in mind for that ‘call’ He’d made on her life back in 1967. A mere eighth grader at the time, she had no clue about the topics she’d be drawn to write about.

Surrendering to the genre God placed on her heart has given Joy new insight into the hearts and lives of those who too often hurt in silence.

How much can one wounded soul take?

Victoria (Tori) Archer has the heart of a soldier. Taken down by an IED during her fourth deployment, she’s permanently separated from her military career and left with physical scars as well as PTSD. Moving back to her hometown of Three Rivers, Michigan, she’s forced by circumstances to live with an irascible and unsympathetic aunt. Tori’s battle with pain, horrific memories, and loss of independence creates a deep yearning for peace. Will God grant her even a small measure of it?

Retired Military Dog Handler Griffin (Griff) McKay turns to training dogs at his farm for wounded warrior therapy, desiring to bring former military men and women emotional and mental healing. Implementing his plan proves to be more difficult than visualized with the arrival of one stubborn soldier. Why has God placed that particular warrior in his path?

Thanksgiving Is STILL Alive ~ Joy Avery Melville

This year our Thanksgiving ~ though different ~ Is STILL alive!

I write Fiction, but never in my wildest story-building has God given me a story that would depict what 2020 has been to so very many individuals!

When God call me to write Contemporary Christian Women's Fiction, I knew it meant I'd be writing stories of fictional journeys leading to joy... and my prayer is, that all that you've gone through, journeying through this maze of 2020, God has still given you the hope of joy.

November 14, 2019, my Christian Contemporary Women's Fiction, Meant For Her released ~ The first chapter takes place on Thanksgiving Day and the heroine's brother, Cam, expresses, in a prayer, all that he is thankful for after having been searching for his sister for weeks after her kidnapping. At the time, Candi wasn't seeing all she had to be thankful for... in fact, she was contemplating all she'd gone through. Kidnapping, beatings, rapes... no, she saw the world as a trauma victim.

Candi realized she never would have survived had a man and his daughter not been out deer hunting, yet her PTSD kept her behind unyielding prison bars in her heart and mind. She didn't have to keep her heart walled off... but it took the help of many to get her past it - GOD WAS HER ULTIMATE RESCUER!

How about you? When was the last time you sat and made a list of every single thing you have to be thankful for? What gives you a hope for the joy to come?

Have you looked into a concordance of the Bible and looked at how many times the word THANKS is listed?

One of my all-time favorite challenges from Scripture is where Paul spoke to Thessalonians and told them, in spite of all they faced, he encouraged them to...
"Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 & 18 (NASB)

I realize this is the year of COVID 19 ~  is stretching us with each shut-down, lock-in, and mask-wearing scenario... unlike one could have possibly imagined. I'm one of those 'too-susceptible-to-be-around-people' individuals. It's been a trying year for me and for my husband, but God has sustained us... provided for us in ways we never thought possible, in spite of all the messiness.

Meant For Her was a fictional story of one woman's journey to joy ~  like our own personal journeys, joy often comes after we've been through some form of sorrow, or hardship, or even a tragedy.

"Weeping may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning." Psalm 30:5 (KJV)

Our Story BEFORE The Story ~ Characters of SOWN IN PEACE (Operation Return To Peace Bk 1)

Hello,
We're so glad you've visited us here at Journeystojoy.net. Our author, Joy Avery Melville has given us life in her latest release ~ SOWN IN PEACE ~

My name is Tori... well... it's Victoria Kinsey Archer, but other than my battle buddies I've served with, I'm Tori. Oh, wait! To my dad, I'm Torrent, 'cause he says I have gone through life torrentially. O... kay, maybe I have. I've served in the Army for nearly ten years and ended up in an IED bombing at our U.S. Army Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan. Would you believe that was on July 4, 2014. Changed my life in huge ways... Ever hear of PTSD? Might want to see what that's all about. Sure has done a number on me. Not just me, though. Some of my buddies have suffered, too. There's a tag our author wrote for ACFW FICTION FINDERS... pretty much fits my story before the story. Check it out below ~
The war she was forced to leave behind
was nothing compared to the battle she faces within and at home

Hi, there. My name is Griff McKay. I'm a MWD (Military Working Dog) and handler trainer. I was before I retired from the Army about five or six years ago. I had some major issues with anger over how things were being dealt with, concerning returning veterans and the dogs they'd bonded with. My sister helped me through some major issues with anger when I returned to Three Rivers, Michigan.

I'm his sister, JJ Mckay Russell... actually it's Dr. Russell. I've worked hard to achieve degrees in psychology and physical therapy in order to work with wounded warriors, specializing in PTSD and the physical wounds as well. I'm married to a driven guy, Ethan Russell, and we live in Three Rivers, Michigan. I opened a practice in Three Rivers in January of 2015 and have been working with those with other psychological needs, while I establish the wounded warrior platform. My brother, Griff, has been working out at his farm, to get a therapy dog program going for veterans. He's had two successful matchings of dogs to vets, training both the dogs and the vets in handling them. It's been hard work, but he's seeing how beneficial his new program, Paws That Care, is. He's had a lot of help getting buildings ready. A contractor by the name of Rex Archer has been busily making Griff's goals come to fruition as far as housing vets during training.

Rex Archer here.  You may remember me from a few weeks back here at Journeystojoy... I kind of spilled my gut, concerning the things I did to dig a ditch... deep and wide... between me and my daughter, Torrent. I won't repeat all I said in that other post, but know, I've got more work cut out for me in filling in that ditch than anything I've been doing out at the Paws That Care therapy dog farm. If you read our story, you'll meet some other mighty fine people... Marty and Pam Douglas... they were there for me when I was floundering in grief. You'll meet Deana Kinsey Langford... I'll let you get to know her on your own. The less I say here, the better. Let me see... without spoiling any of the new novel Joy Avery Melville has written, I think I'll just recommend you read it for yourselves.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ REX ARCHER ~ Sown In Peace by Joy Avery Melville

Hello. My name is Rex Archer. I'm one guy full of remorse over my treatment of my daughter, Torrent.

Oh, her given name is Victoria Kinsey Archer, but she's always been my Torrent. Her aunt, on the other hand, has always called her Victoria Kinsey. Kinsey was a family name on my wife's side. (her aunt is a character our author got so she loved to hate) Anyway, I prefer to keep with the name I chose for my Torrent, 'cause you see, my girl's gone through life in a Torrential kind of way.

She's my only child... straight-A student... A driven young adult, went into the Army... worked her way up... and volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan four times. It was that last deployment... well... you'll need to read the entire book to get a good handle on what happened there.

I messed up our relationship... royally. I kept secrets about her mother's illness, and bowed to the wishes of my wife and sister-in-law by keeping everything hush-hush. Then, I pulled a real 'stupid'... a selfish stupid. By the time Torrent came home between her third and fourth deployment... let's just say, what she had to face was a whole different type of war. It became a cold one.
Torrent left for Fort Hood way earlier than she would have had to, during her break... then volunteered for that fourth deployment as soon as it came up.

I've got neighbors. Their names are Pam and Marty Douglas. Marty is retired Army. The man gave me some insights I desperately needed.

When Joy created me as a character, she gave me some sound strengths, but she made me human... one with flaws... one with a void in his heart.

Meeting her other characters has given me something more to live for, I guess you'd say.  See if you agree with that once you've read the novel.

The author of My Story ~ Joy Avery Melville

This first story in the Operation Return To Peace Series, Sown In Peace, is one many, many of our heroes across the United States of America could tell - in fact - when my author, Joy Avery Melville,  researched for Sown In Peace, and the stories to follow,  God granted her desire for human resources to guide her through much of the 'logistics', you might call them. She's said many times, since, "There's way more to this novel than fiction."

Jeremy Rockstroh of Fort Wayne, IN and Keith Youngblood of Bryan, TX  contributed much of their time and multiple stories from their experiences and the depths of their hearts to this novel. Joy considers their friendship an honor and privilege.

This is the first of Joy's books I'm reading. I personally love to read books that touch on hard subjects, especially when they're well done.
I particularly love the way the author explored the issues in clear, believable ways. I'm looking forward to her next book.
Definitely recommend.

It's just not fair....that this ended waaaayyyy too soon. The plot and characters were well developed, interesting, and kept me turning (swiping) at the speed of light. I even tried to slow down and savor. Didn't go so well.

The difficult subject matter is sprinkled with humor, unusual twists, and intrigue, all encompassed by the fact that God loves us and always has our back.
Can't wait for the next one...

She survived a fate worse than death, only to have her fiance blame her for "asking for it!"

I am generally not a fan of fiction that delves into such difficult themes, but Candi's story was one of overcoming. If you know someone who endured similar injury, you might find it helpful. After she's kidnapped, raped, and left for dead, her brother and best friend are the ones who give her the loving support her fiance does not. Candi's recovery is triumphant in the end, and her journey is believable and full of insights along the way.

As others have said, Joy Avery Melville makes a difficult topic easier to read with her theme of hope, faith, and touches of humor. Oh, and a young girl's dream of owning a horse is a big part of the story and healing which I quite enjoyed.

Recommended for those who read women's fiction and aren't afraid to be moved by difficult topics.

I recently finished reading Meant For Her, and I am deeply impressed by this debut author’s skill in creating a novel where appealing characters, active and expanding Christian faith, and society-shaping issues all combine so smoothly while remaining a Story. I definitely will want to see how the sequels follow this first book.

My heart broke for Candi and what the character endured and lived through. It's a hard topic to cover sensitively. My stumbling point in the story causing the 4 stars (I would have preferred to do 4 1/2 stars but I don't know how) anyway, Mack's Irish brogue was really hard for me to read. I think I'm too Norwegian. lol His character was wonderful as is the brother.

Very nicely done by Joy Melville. She tackled something clearly God put on her heart.

If you're looking for a lighthearted read, you may want to keep on looking because this one isn't an easy read by any means! It deals with some very serious topics such as rape and unwanted pregnancy. This could certainly be a trigger for some, and in general these aren't the most enjoyable of topics to read about, are they? Still despite the subject matter at hand, it truly was a story of healing and of hope that is so necessary.

I must admit at first I struggled to get into the story...finding the dialog a bit hard to follow. After some thought I realized that this is nothing in the story or writing itself. Instead, I believe it had to do with the formatting in the advanced copy that I received for consideration... this will be a nonissue for those reading the finished copy. Still, it did keep me from really getting into the story as much as I would have liked in the beginning... once I adjusted to the formatting, it was easier to connect with the characters and the story itself.

And oh what great characters they were! We meet Candi in the aftermath of her attack. The story follows her journey of healing both physically and emotionally. Again, not an easy topic, but one that I feel was handled both realistically (not sugar coated) and respectfully. There was a romance story in there as well with the perfect novel hero Mack, but more than anything it was the story of healing that stood out to me most. I loved this beautiful reminder that while tragic events aren't what God wants for us, He can and DOES bring good things from those intended for evil.

While this might not be the type of book that I would normally read as far as subject matter, it did have a fantastic message that I believe we can all use a reminder of now and again.

**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

My heart really hurt for Candi-girl. No one should have to go through what she did.
I think the author has handled this subject quite well and she has pulled this off in making the characters realistic.
As often in real life this does happen leaving the victim feeling ashamed, afraid, and looking over your shoulder at any little noise.
Fear will hold you captive. Once it grabs you it will stay as long as you let it.
It's why we need God. We need His Grace. All we need to do is ask.
I liked it that forgiveness is added in here too. Even though it's hard, we need to do it for our peace of mind.
My emotions were all over the place. My advice to you as a reader please have some tissue by your side.
You'll find yourself rooting for the main character as the author puts her through whatever life throws at her.
In my opinion Candi-girl came out the better person for it.
She was truly amazing and I loved her for it.
She also has a pretty special brother Cam. I loved that he supported his sister.
The best part about this book was the horses for me. I love horses ever since I was little.
Such gorgeous horses too!
I really enjoyed this book after I got into it. It starts out slow but then it gets better. You'll not want to put this book down until you see how Candis' story ends. Let me tell you you be thinking about her long after the book ends.
I might add the cover of the book has all of my favorite colors on it. The path on the cover will call to you too.
NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own. I was NOT required to write a review.

A deeply touching story

This is a wonderful story about healing. It is well written with just the right sensitivity. And Mack is every girl’s hero

The author crafted a story that does have potential triggers for some readers, but the faith message is powerful. Melville tackled some difficult subject manners in a sensitive way. Characters and scenarios were realistic and relatable. I had a hard time liking Harper, but even his character was spot-on for how some people would react in his position, unfortunately. Cam is the dedicated and loving big brother even woman would long to have. I was thrilled with the ending, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

One of my favorite quotes:

"God has our journeys mapped out in such a way that whatever detours we're forced to take, He gets us to the best possible destination of joy at the end.
