DAY FOUR ~ November 14 ~ Interview with Betty:

AUTHOR: Betty, I imagine surviving on a jungle island is a tough undertaking for you at age sixty-nine.

BETTY: When I ended up here, I was sure God was punishing me, but instead I’m singing hallelujah! This island is like the Holy Spirit whittling away at our lives with hard times to bring us to God.

AUTHOR: What’s been your worst experience so far?

BETTY: Stepping on a land mine.

AUTHOR: A land mine? You mean … left over from World War II?

BETTY: Uh-huh. As if starvation, snakes, typhoons, and animal attacks aren’t enough. Praise God we have Jake looking out for us.

AUTHOR: I imagine Crystal is your biggest concern.

BETTY: That girl will be the death of me yet! She’s taken a shine to Jake as her daddy-figure, though, and he’s having a good effect on her. Poor thing, she’s never had a mom or dad.

AUTHOR: I hear Jake’s effect on Eve isn’t as successful.

BETTY: Those two drive me crazy. I don’t know what happened in Eve’s past, but she insists there’s no such thing as a good man and Jake is not going to tell her what to do. They’re both bull-headed, and sometimes I have to step in and take over the reins.

AUTHOR: Good for you, Betty. Take care, and, uh, watch where you step.
