And yet, here I am, with boxes still packed around the living room, nothing hung on the walls, and no one local I can call a friend. My best friend, Tina, still lives back in Tennessee, and she begs me to move back every time we talk. But I can’t. My brothers have a bet going as to how long I’ll stay here before tucking tail and coming home.
Home.
Tennessee doesn’t feel like home, either. No more than Huntsville. If I didn’t know better, I’d say I was homeless. And yet, I know I’m not. I have a mailbox downstairs where I collect my bills and junk every day. And sometimes even a letter from Jordan.
Now there’s someone who knows what home is. He’s living on his family’s property in Louisiana, working his dream job of being a nurse practitioner, and leading singing at the congregation where he grew up. How did we meet? Tina. He’s her cousin, and when I started looking for a pen pal, she suggested we’d be a good fit.
I didn’t think I’d ever try being a pen pal again, but stumbling over that box of Gran’s old letters a few weeks ago really inspired me, I guess. We’ll see how long I stick it out this time. Growing up, I didn’t make it more than a few weeks.
Maybe if I find a picture to hang on my wall, it will feel homier. Or maybe, I just need to give up and let my brothers be right for once. Ugh. Who wants to do that?
I wonder if Jordan would have any ideas to help me feel more at home here in the place I always wanted to be.

The Author of My Story: Amy Anguish
Amy R. Anguish grew
up a preacher's kid, and in spite of having lived in seven different states
that are all south of the Mason Dixon line, she is not a football fan. Currently,
she resides in Tennessee with her husband, daughter, and son, and usually a
bossy cat or two. Amy has an English degree from Freed-Hardeman University that
she intends to use to glorify God, and she wants her stories to show that while
Christians face real struggles, it can still work out for good.
