My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Everett Herring ~ in ~ Land That I Love ~ by ~ Gail Kittleson

Everett Herring here, from Nottinghamshire, land of Robin Hood and too many pivotal historical events to mention. Since my father died in the Great War and Mother perished shortly thereafter in the Great Epidemic, Father’s parents have graciously reared me,

My delicate, beautiful wife—how could I ever have known what went on in her fragile mind?—is now passed from this earth. With her, she took my dignity, my vocation, and the only home I ever knew.

Now, along with Grandfather’s butler, William, and my young son Donnie, I take my leave of my homeland, bound for another. Our destination? Texas Hill Country, they call it, where we plan to start anew after unspeakable pain and sorrow here.

Some things, one never forgets—this is the positive and the negative of life. New relationships form as our journeys meander hither and yon, but the good we have experienced, along with the terrible, remain with us. With these memories inscribed on our hearts, we face inevitable change.

Our task? To pick up the pieces of the terrible and embrace the joys of the good. Much more easily said than done, but day-by-day, I take up this work, and as we move along to a new world, the delight of observing Donnie grow and learn gradually assuages my pain.

A great portion of the good lies in Donnie, and in William, Grandfather’s employee, but far more than that—his friend. Relying on his steadfast intuition and determination, I bid farewell to this land that I love.

Sarah Feight ~ in ~ SARAH'S CHOICE ~ by ~ Pegg Thomas

Hello, I’m Sarah Feight. Joy asked me to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised on the outskirts of Philadelphia.’Twas a wonderful to place to grow up, not in the heart of the city, but close enough to walk there on occasion. And far enough away to avoid the plagues that sometimes came through in the hot summer months. We were not rich, but we had enough of what we needed, and we had each other.

When I married David, we had such plans. His brothers were opening a new trading post on the frontier near Fort Pitt. They planned to trade with the Indians there, bringing in furs to sell in the east, as well as other items. It all sounded so… romantic. We would be some of the first people in that area of Pennsylvania. Our cabin would be made of logs cut to clear the area around the trading post. We would raise our family alongside the local Indians, learning from each other, to build a better future for everyone.

His brothers were both married, and when we arrived I, I met my sisters-in-law as well as my nieces and nephew. I also met a young Ottawa woman who spoke nearly perfect English. While my sisters-in-law were busy tending their children and homes, Spotted Shell and I explored the forest around the cabins. She shared my love of healing herbs and wild edibles. She showed me several of each that I had not known before. I was able to show her a few as well. ’Twas a wonderful friendship.

In those early days, it seemed our lives would be all we could have wished them. When that changed, we had little warning. Even what warning we had in no way prepared me for what was to follow. Nothing could have prepared me for what was to follow.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Sgt. Griff McKay ~ in ~ SOWN IN PEACE ~ by Joy Avery Melville ~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIP!

Joy says my story is celebrating a birthday. It's hard to imagine it's been a year since my heart was opened to the public and readers.

I'm Sgt. Griffin (Griff) McKay. I'm a retired Army guy. I worked as a Military Dog Handler/Trainer of other MWD handlers. When it came time to reenlist, I had a struggle over the decision for the first time in my career. You see, I saw men come home wounded while I was stationed in Texas, and the dogs they'd been trained with were turned over to another soldier. Broke my heart when I saw how callous the Army was at severing ties, the bonds, that were stronger due to the life or death situations over there in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I became an angry soldier. I could sense the damage I might do in working with the men and dogs who were being prepared to go serve in ways that could mean crippling or death to one or both of the team. It became clear to me I'd have to resign my position. Since working with those dogs and the men who were to handle them was all I was really trained for, I chose to retire and go home. To what? I could not imagine myself in a regular day-job.

I'd become less than pleased with God during the building up of my anger. I contacted a realtor in the area of Michigan where my sister, JJ Russell, lived, and I asked him to find me a property. A secluded, out of the way place. I planned to move there and pretty much crawl away and live as private a life as I could.

Funny, isn't it, how God moves us, sometimes without us realizing He's putting things in place for His glory and our good? Even when we are displeased with Him or disappointed in what He's allowed in our lives and those we care about.

Months later...

I came to Three Rivers and to the property I'd purchased without having stepped foot on the land.  I was absolutely thrilled by the amount of privacy it granted me... seclusion at its best, yet easily within five miles of Three Rivers
THEN
One afternoon, I was outside, ready to walk down to the very large pond across the driveway and away from the roomy cabin. As I stepped onto the gravel, something drew my attention. A young golden retriever was slowly moving my direction, working its way up the long, curving drive, dragging a large-linked chain hooked to its collar. Matted and dirty, the poor thing appeared to have been abused. As I approached the dog, it cowered and lay down, covering its muzzle with both front paws. My heart broke for the animal.

Now, you've got to realize I was all done with dogs. Too many memories had plagued me, since I'd worked with multiple breeds as an Army Military Dog Handler. Here I was, faced with a dog in need of care... urgent care... and I had no idea who to call. So, I phoned my sister, who worked in town and had for some time. As soon as I told her about this shaggy, miserable dog, she laughed. That's right! Laughed at the irony of it all.

I want you to read SOWN IN PEACE to find out what I decided to do with that poor canine and how God used it to bring me into Joy's novel. I'm so glad she was led to include me.. let's just say, I benefitted in many ways for her having done so.

Oh, and by the way, Joy is gifting a signed copy to someone who leaves a comment below - don't miss this opportunity to find out what she did with me in Sown In Peace!

The Author of My Story:   Joy Avery Melville

Fully intending to write Historical Romance—had in fact— she had no plans to deviate from that. God had something else in mind for that ‘call’ He’d made on her life back in 1967. A mere eighth grader at the time, she had no clue about the topics she’d be drawn to write about.

Surrendering to the genre God placed on her heart has given Joy new insight into the hearts and lives of those who too often hurt in silence.

The settings of Joy’s books are near where she lives in Schoolcraft, Michigan with her husband of nearly 48 years and their almost 3-year-old Yorkie, Is-A-Bella Bindi, (Is-a-beautiful little girl) who thinks she’s a much larger breed with tomboy tendencies.

Joy loves to hear from readers and will respond!

Our Stories BEFORE The Story ~ Cooper Callahan and KC Briggs ~ in ~ JUSTICE AT DAWN ~ by ~ Valerie Massey Goree

Cooper Callahan:

I just returned to San Diego after a successful assignment to return a missing teenager to his anxious parents in Florida. Those outcomes are always gratifying, but I’ve had my share of failures, too. You see, I’ve been an agent with the International Retrieval Organization for fifteen years. We don’t always locate the missing person, or free the hostage, or keep the witness safe, but we always give one hundred percent to every case.

Over the years, I’ve fulfilled many roles in the organization. For the past five years I’ve been the chief training officer for recruits. Many rookies these days enter the program thinking they’re going to be the top dog in no time. It’s my job to teach them what an agent needs to know, but I also gauge whether or not they’ll make the cut. Being an effective agent is more than completing course work. Agents must have the inner strength to forge ahead with the assignment no matter what is happening around them or to them. They must be intuitive, trust their partners, and trust their instincts. I can’t teach them that.

I’m sitting at my desk in the office, reading the application form from the newest recruit, a woman named Kitty Claire Briggs who has an appointment with me in fifteen minutes. She seems to have all the necessary prerequisites. The boss had slapped a sticky note on her application. Hold on to your cap. This rookie will surprise you. I wonder what he meant. Oh, well. I’ll soon find out.

I open my desk drawer and remove a file where I keep a list of all the agents I’ve trained thus far. During the time I’ve been in charge of the program, I’ve updated the coursework and hands on training assignments. I’m proud of the improvements I implemented. I rock in my chair and think back to my rookie period. As a former small town sheriff with a college degree in criminal justice, I thought I was going to sail through the course and impress the shirts off those in charge. Not quite. I did have it easier than some, but I had a lot to learn too.

Those early years were hard but fun. Until the accident. Since then, I’ve had to remind myself numerous times why I left the sheriff’s department to become an agent. Unique cases. Extensive resources. Superior technology.

I shift in my chair and check my watch. The recruit will be here any minute. Compose yourself, Cooper. If you’re going to ask her why she wants to work for IRO, remember your reasons for applying.

After taking in a deep breath, I open her folder. A knock on my door. I stand and call, “Come in.”

KC:

Whew. I can’t believe I’m this nervous. Applying to be an agent with IRO was a risk for me. Sure, I want to help people in traumatic situations, but what if the bigwigs discover the real reason I applied? I’ll have to be extra careful during my training and later, if I make it. Who are you kidding, girl? Of course you’ll make it. Top of your class in any physical course you took. You hit the target every time you fire a gun. You’ve overcome so much in your short life. You’ll be an agent before you know it.

I’m parked outside the office building, and although I have an alarm set on my phone, I keep an eye on the dashboard clock. I sip my iced tea then set the bottle in the cup holder and check the vanity mirror. Why, I’m not sure. Habit I suppose. I don’t wear lipstick and my hair is, well, I’m bald. Shave my head every morning. My parents often ask me why I continue although I’m cancer free, and I have no ready answer except maybe in rebellion. Not toward them. Never. I love them as if they were my birthparents. I might be a rebel at heart, though. As a kid, I always wanted to do everything contrary to what was expected. Learn to cook. Nope. I chose to fix our bicycles with my brothers. Help Mother with her scrapbooks. Not when the boys were building a tree fort.

A bus rumbles by the parking lot. I look in the mirror again. Maybe I should dab on some lipstick. Or blush. My honey-toned skin is flawless, for which I’m grateful, but I need more color. I pinch my cheeks. Better. I wipe at a smudge of mascara under one eye. Gray eyes. Unusual for sure. Did my birthmother have gray eyes? I knew she was Caucasian, but that’s all.

The feeling of abandonment is never far from my soul. I clutch the jacket over my heart and blow out a breath. If I become an agent, I will find out what happened to her.

The alarm beeps. Time to go. I climb out of my car and smooth my skirt. Shoulders back, I stride toward the office door. Watch out world, here comes the next IRO agent.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ A Familiar Spirit ~ in ~ CAST OUT: Chronicles of a Familiar Spirit ~ Ivani Greppi

As a familiar spirit, a demon, perhaps an imp, as some may choose to label me, my authority and control over generations of Branca’s family tree have been my lot for decades, spanning throughout three continents.

Just as a numerous company of rebel angels, I was given authority over bloodlines for multiple millennia. This is how we serve the rulers and principalities, the underworld’s gods, the spiritual forces, and dominions of this dark world.

It is our cup. Our portion. Our inheritance. Our pleasure to deceive and crush these mongrels made of flesh and spirit. To cause suffering. For them never to see the light of life and be satisfied. To blind the unbelieving ones’ minds, so the light of the Son may not dawn on them.

That is until an impertinent preacher man arrived on the scene attempting to usurp my power over these miserable immigrants assigned to me.

Did he show them a way out of their spiritual stupor?

Did his “weapons” strike terror in my heart?

Did he teach Branca and her family that the Son rises over those who have faith?

Did they learn that when the Son radiates His light, I must flee?

Has not this story been written for thousands of years?

What has been will be again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Now is there?

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Jade Pepperdine ~ in ~ Journey To Chi Yah

Hey everybody. Jade Pepperdine here. I guess I’m supposed to tell you about myself before Journey To ChÄ«Yah, even though it’s embarrassing. But if that’s what Joy wants, here goes.

I’m 34 and live in small-town-nowhere-you’ve-ever-heard-of. I’m named after my great-aunt Jade Edith Pepperdine, and I’ve always hated my name, especially since my mother has a tendency to taunt me for being ‘Jaded.’ Usually, I just roll my eyes when she spits out her favorite Momism, but she can be quite annoying.

So, what can I tell you about me? I’m actually pretty unremarkable. Kinda basic, plain, and a tad rotund (need to deal with THAT one someday) but it’s all good. For real. It doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it used to—okay, getting ahead of myself here...

I grew up in a basic “Pastor’s family” where everything looked all neat and tidy from the outside. There’s three of us girls (Krissie, Marie, and myself) and my brother Bill, who is known as the free-spirit that never quite fits in. I’ve always admired him. Maybe someday I’ll have the courage to pull off some of his wild antics.

My father, Gil, was a wonderful man and a great preacher. He used to test his sermons out on me, then we’d go for donuts. I miss him so much—he’s been gone five years now. Mom blamed his heart attack on consequences for his actions, but I don’t agree. Oh sure, he made some mistakes. Okay, pretty major mistakes, having an affair with his secretary and all, but Mom must have missed the sermons Daddy did on grace. Her constant harping at him had to wear him down—he could do nothing right in her eyes. Do I blame her for Daddy’s death? Strangely enough, no, just seeing the facts a bit clearer these days. There I go again... getting ahead of myself.

Then there’s Mom. Louisa Jean Pepperdine. She’s been a sore subject for me. She’s still the same, with her ‘perfect religious lady’ appearance, sharp tongue, and critical barbs that hurt like bee stings.

Growing up in the Pepperdine home left me wounded enough that I made a run for it… right into the arms of an abusive alcoholic that I married at nineteen. Talk about jumping from one hot mess to another. Fortunately, I figured out pretty early on that my marriage to Daniel would not end well, and I got out before he could add too much damage to my already-fragile psyche.

I work at a library and live in a tiny little gal’s house with my Shih Tzu, Prince, who I adore. I might have rescued him, but he certainly rescued me and takes the place of most humans. My circle of friends is small, since I prefer to keep to myself. If I had to guess, it’s because relationships are risky and I’ve been burned a lot.

Being my friend isn’t always easy. I can be a little high maintenance. It’s hard to deal with my control-freak tendencies, snarky crankiness that gets the best of me sometimes, and the fall-out from a fear-fueled life. My reaction time to button-pushing, my feelings so vulnerable to pain, and my temper at the edge of explosion most of the time, became my way of life.

As you might’ve guessed, Journey to ChÄ«Yah is about my travels, and those weren’t exactly a Disney vacation—trust me on that. I got stuck there after an unexpected crisis... okay. Enough said, or I’ll tell you THE STORY.... That, you’ll just have to read... for yourself... soon in Journey to ChÄ«Yah.

Our Story BEFORE the Story ~ DeAndre and Janell ~ in ~ Mercy’s Song ~ by ~ Sarah Hanks

DeAndre

I’m on my way back…home? Where is home anyway? I thought I could find a home with Mama in Chicago, but nothing turned out the way I’d imagined. When I got a scholarship to art school in the same city my mother fled to after Pa died, how could I not call that fate? But Mama held me at a distance. So secretive at times I can’t help wonder if she’s hiding something. I never did fit in with that school crowd. Couldn’t relate.

So when the scholarship and the money ran out, where was I to go? Definitely not back to Reg. I’ve cut those ties for good. So I’m bound for Crawford County, for Java Joe’s. The last place that felt like home. I don’t even know what I’ll find there. I haven’t kept in touch. Do Rob, Patrick, and Eddie even work there still? Do they even remember me? Canvases of painted dreams shift around in my trunk. I know what’s behind me. What’s ahead?

Janell

I left for college floating on a cloud of bright aspirations. Janell Brodigm. Most Likely to Succeed. Of course, I’d make it. Why wouldn’t I? I’d never—never—gotten below and A in my life. I naturally get along well with people. Teachers, peers. I guess that’s why I didn’t see it coming, this tsunami of failure. What is it they say? Big fish in a small pond, small fish in a big pond? Whatever body of water I ended up in my Freshman year, I drowned in it. That brilliant future everyone swore was in front of me? I sulked home with its broken shards scraping my hands, my heart.

What’s next? I haven’t a clue. I’m working at Java Joe’s—the same coffee shop I worked at throughout high school. It’s not like it’s a bad job. Just far less than my parents wanted for me. Far less than I’d dreamed of. Now that their star daughter has lost her gleam, my parents are intent on setting me up with one successful bachelor or another. As if I can’t make it on my own and need someone to bail me into respectability by association. Humiliating. Maybe… maybe I just need someone to believe in me again. Or maybe I need someone to believe in.

Our Story BEFORE the Story ~ Amy Torelli & Ted McMasters ~ MIRACLE IN MILAN ~ by ~ MaryAnn Diorio

Hi, Everyone! I’m Amy Torelli, a CPA and Chief Auditor with Enson Pharmaceuticals, a global pharmaceutical company based in New York City. My boss recently gave me the assignment of my life. He sent me to our Italian branch office in Milan, Italy, to investigate a possible embezzlement. I’m both excited and nervous. Can I pull it off?

Although people think I’ve got it all together, they don’t know that, on the inside, I’m falling apart. You see, my dad abandoned my mom and me when I was only five years old. I was devastated and, from that moment on, I’ve never trusted men. So, I’ve pushed aside all consideration of ever getting married and having a family.

But when I got to Milan, I met Ted McMasters, the current VP of Enson Italia. The guy totally knocked me off my feet. But I’m afraid. Afraid of what falling for Ted could mean for me. Only more pain, for sure. And nothing is worth that to me.

I’m Ted McMasters, VP of Enson Italia. Although I’m from the States, Enson assigned me to this job to help straighten things out in the Italian branch office. I really wanted to be a pastor in my early days, but I didn’t think I could make a living as a pastor. Plus, I wanted to be somebody. I still feel guilty about that decision.

I also feel guilty about my breakup with my girlfriend shortly before I was going to propose to her. You see, I’ve got a lot of hang-ups about my worth. When I was a kid, I could never do enough to please my dad. He always complained about how and where I was falling short. That didn’t help my confidence at all. So, to this day, I still struggle with feeling good about myself. And that affects my relationship with women.

Speaking of women, the Chief Auditor from the New York office just arrived to audit our books. I noticed some suspicious entries and notified headquarters, so they sent her. Wow! What a beauty! She took my breath away. But I can’t afford to get involved with any woman ever again. It hurts too much. And hurt is something I need to avoid at all costs.

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Ashley Hayes ~ in ~ A Life Redeemed ~ by ~ Olivia Rae

God’s peace be with you this day. My name is Ashley Hayes and I hail from London, England. It is the year of our Lord, 1559. My life started out in a very merry way. I was born to a Catholic textile merchant in 1540. I enjoyed throwing daggers with my two older brothers, Robert and Asher in my father’s warehouse. My joy ended early in my life when my father started openly professing his Catholic faith in the era of King Henry VIII Reformed Church.

When young King Edward took the throne, things became worse. Many refused to work with my father because of his Catholic beliefs and often he was not granted permission to do business with foreign merchants. My father began to gamble and make risky ventures to keep his creditors away, but he failed and was destined for debtor’s prison.

The burden of Father’s folly fell to my brothers. Years earlier, Robert, the eldest, became a priest and later was killed in 1554 trying to bring about peace during Wyatt’s Rebellion. From then on, the family’s wellbeing became my brother, Asher’s burden. He would lie, cheat, steal, and sometimes sell tidbits of information to keep food on the table for my mother and me. One night he learned about King Edward’s death before anyone outside the palace knew. Asher took the news to Mary Tudor, who was about to step in a trap created by the powerful regent, John Dudley. Grateful, the new Queen Mary Tudor made my brother a royal agent, a spy. He paid off all my father’s debts, and though my father’s business was never the same, life was secure indeed.

Until one night, the door to our home burst open and my parents and me were dragged to prison on a trumped-up charge. Only once was it mentioned that Queen Mary had given the order so that Asher would go on a dangerous mission for her. The months in the cold, dank cell nearly killed my mother. Then one day we were released. I was taken to the court of Queen Mary and made one of her ladies-in-waiting. Often, I wondered why I was there. The queen ignored me and the other ladies would barely speak to me because I was a lowly merchant’s daughter. Then Asher returned for a short time. He told me he was leaving the country forever. I was to be kept at court as assurance he would never return.

In 1558, Queen Mary died. I was free. My father had died a year earlier and my mother was remarried to a farmer. Suddenly I was in a cottage with three step-siblings. I would have lived out my days happily there, but Queen Elizabeth has other plans for me. I am being sent to Scotland to check on the loyalties of the fierce Laird Gavin Armstrong. I cannot tell you how fearful I am for I am no spy, and Garvin is no fool. What will he do to me when he learns my true purpose for being in Scotland?

My Story BEFORE The Story ~ Jessica Thompson ~ in ~ THE PROPOSAL ~ by ~ Tanya Eavenson

Hello, friends of Joy! My name is Jessica Thompson. It feels mighty unusual being here with you today, since I’d never heard of a “blog” until a few weeks ago. However, Joy assures me ya’ll are quite friendly and wanted to hear about my predicament.

Well, see, I was living in Oklahoma where my father was the town’s sheriff … when ... it’s still hard to talk about. It’s about my father. He warned me not to go to the orphanage. I couldn’t understand why, so I did.

Cliff was there. And—it’s my fault my father is dead, and I’ve been on the run from Cliff’s gang ever since.

Until my stage coach was robbed near the town of Graham. Who knew that the man pretending to be one of the robbers was the town’s sheriff? After all, he didn’t have a star on his chest and kept talking about marrying me. I did the only thing a woman could do in that situation... I shoved my gun in his back at the first chance the good Lord gave me.

Oh, once I discovered who he was, I was embarrassed for sure. Felt the heat flame my insides the more him and his deputy continued to stare at my confusion. Let’s just say from that point on, I tried to stay as clear from Blake … um, the sheriff, as much as possible being stuck in this small town. I’ve purchased a horse from the town livery owner, and it will arrive on the train in three weeks. I just pray Cliff and his gang don’t catch up with me.

Until my horse comes in on the train, I’ve been helping Mrs. Briggen with cooking at the boardinghouse. If you’re ever in Graham, Texas, stop on in. I’d love to bake you my little breads.

~ ~ ~ ~

After an American Christian Writers Conference (ACFW) in St. Louis, Missouri, I visited the Museum of Westward Expansion. All the exhibits were wonderful, but my favorite was seeing an actual stagecoach. I was so fascinated; I took over 20 pictures and let my imagination run wild. In the early stages of writing, the stagecoach was originally the main way of transportation in The Rescue, but while I was there, I decided to use the coach in my second book, The Proposal.

There were many other things I researched, but one especially was horses. I knew little about horses so I contacted a stable and asked if I could visit once a week. The owner agreed and every Friday I would help him feed the horses, muck the stalls, spread out the hay--really whatever he showed me to do, I did it. I’d pelt him with questions about anything and everything that dealt with horses and caring for them. He was the one who suggested I use colic for one of my scenes in The Rescue. I learned so much, I was able to use that same knowledge throughout The Proposal.

My research for The Rescue led me to eBay on several occasions in search of books to better help me understand and visualize people, places, and things. I asked my husband in passing to find me a mid to late 1800’s book on eBay. I didn’t care what it was, but something having to do with Boston since this is where the first of the series begins. To my surprise, not only did he buy one, but he also purchased three McGuffey books, the Eclectic Primer (Copyright 1867), Eclectic Spelling Book (Copyright 1865), and Second Eclectic Reader (Copyright 1867). You’ll also find a description of these readers in the next novel in the series, The Bargain, set to release in 2023.

One of the stumbling blocks to writing The Rescue was I couldn’t visualize the grandness of the Easton’s estate in Boston. I needed to see the type of home they possibly lived in so I took a trip to North Carolina to see the Biltmore. The visit certainly helped me to understand the time period.

This is a drawing of the Easton Ranch I had made by a wonderful illustrator, Morgan Gardner, to help me visualize difference scenes. It’s wonderful to see their ranch come alive!

Our Story BEFORE The Story ~ ~ in ~ COLD CASE TRAIL ~ by ~ Sharee Stover

I’m Trey Jackson, Nebraska State Trooper and K-9 handler for my Belgian Malanois, Magnum. He’s the best partner in the world. He knows all my secrets and limitations and still accepts me. Dogs are amazing that way.

But sometimes those secrets resurface, and we’re forced to remember.

The night Kayla called, Magnum and I were working a manhunt in the middle of nowhere Nebraska. Miles of cornfields, cows, and open land make for difficult work, but it was our very first assignment together and we were up to the challenge. My training as a trooper solidified the call on my life to help people. It’s what I was meant to do, and I love it. So that night, we knew the community wouldn’t be safe until we found the perpetrator.

I wasn’t oblivious to the urgency in Kayla’s voice, but she had a knack for drama and considering I’d recently told her about my feelings for her best friend, Justine Stark, I assumed she was plying for attention. I couldn’t have been more wrong. For the record, I didn’t ignore Kayla. I asked my older brother, also a trooper, Slade, to go to her apartment and help her. But she slammed the door in his face. Literally. The action really had me wondering what her motive was. If she’d been in danger, why not accept Slade’s help?

How was I to know that night would change everything? How could I have known Kayla would fall victim to her stalker? And that Justine would hate me.

I’m Justine Stark. I never imagined I’d see Trey Jackson again after Kayla’s funeral. It would’ve been so much better to have his friendship to lean on after losing my best friend, but I knew she’d called him for help, and he hadn’t been there for her.

Just like I hadn’t been. I’m not ignoring my role in her fate.

Kayla was everything I wanted to be, lively, fun, charismatic. And she was in love with Trey so how could I possibly tell her that I cared for him too? Easy, I couldn’t. So, I didn’t. Best friends don’t cross that line—even after they’re gone.

I guess if I’m analyzing myself, I’d say I live in a perpetual state of making atonement. I wanted to help others because I wasn’t there the night Kayla needed me.

I promised Kayla’s death wouldn’t be in vain and allowed the loss of my best friend to propel my career. That’s why I chose psychology. I’ve testified in numerous cases, cared for the victims and sought justice for them. All because I couldn’t offer that justice to Kayla. Blaming Trey was easier than accepting Kayla’s stalker had taken her life. And it wasn’t until that same killer hunted me, that I realized just how much I needed Trey’s help.
